Relishing the diversity in numbers

“I missed being a rank holder by 4 marks in my final examination”. I used to often add this statement for myself if someone asks me about my qualification. I qualified to be a Chartered Accountant some 17 years back.

Before the results got out, I was praying desperately to God to just pass in the examination. I used to fare well in academics and get high scores; however, the CA Exams are an altogether different ball game when it comes to clearing them. The number of people passing the examination can be as low as 3% in some years so it casts a doubt on anyone appearing for them.

I was on cloud nine when I heard about my result, but it quickly became about what more could I have achieved and the thought of making it to the Top 50. I relished my accomplishment in a hurry and was looking at another desire for satisfaction.

How often, we cook a meal with so much effort, but when it comes to enjoying it, we eat it in a rush to go out to office or work or whatever next we have to do.

So many parents fail to acknowledge and appreciate what good their child has done, but rather compare the results or talents with other children.

The companies and media applaud and emphasize numbers and metrics in order to be best in class, the No.1 brand, maximum viewership etc.

While numbers are important and help one to achieve better results, it does not allow one to relax and appreciate. If we as a society relax and bring acceptance of different numbers we put to our achievements, it may allow many to be comfortable in their own skin.

A wise man once said, “It is not how much you own but how much you can savor that matters.”

What if you can allow yourself to value the number you are in?
