Businesswoman par excellence – the homemaker

All finance managers in a prior company were invited to a session a few years back to hear from Dr. Rakesh Sinha, an expert in Supply Chain. The team present listened in rapt attention on the topic Theory of Constraints.

He explained that the best example of supply chain functioning optimally is not only in terms of the quantity but also making sure that the stock is fresh. He then chimed in a creative and simple way to explain the concepts and the supply chain operating in our everyday homes, in the kitchen.

Relating back to what I heard, I was observing my mother as she actually puts many of these principles into practice. She tries to ensure that there is minimum wastage, no stock outs of materials; availability is ensured of variety of ingredients which help to make the delicious final products to the liking of others, provide timely and fresh delivery and at the same time staying within budgets.

Like many mothers, neither does she look for an outward reward from her family to do well in her role nor does she have a fancy corporate title to her name or a degree which establishes her credibility. But she knows her job well and is a master at it.

Women are exceptional in every field be it at home or outside. It is a narrow outlook or lack of perspective when the job of a homemaker is considered less skillful than any industry job.

The power behind doing the complex models which ensure a smooth functioning of the kitchen for the homemaker or for an expert working in the industry then comes from something more meaningful than the college education one could attend or the human brain which an individual is blessed with. For my mother, like many homemakers, it comes from love – by giving it to her family and by getting it in return.

A homemaker may not always shine in the forefront, but one can establish her worth by thinking if she wasn’t there. The home could well be mismanaged, budgets could go awry, but more importantly we would not know love like we know it today.

As one works out of love and does things to make others happy, they become better at it. Make sure that you take the secret ingredient of love to any work you do today. And also remember to look for, value and appreciate the love in the work done by others.
