Better to be proactive than reactive

I believe precaution is better than cure and got my booster shot against COVID-19 this Saturday.

Even though it led me to temporary discomfort and a day of fever, I feel it is worth it as I believe it prepares my body’s immunity to fight a real threat in the future.

A proactive way of looking at health is much better than to end up with a health issue and then be at the mercy of medicines.

One of my friends was confiding in me how he keeps a certain set of money aside regularly to take care of future health exigencies. When I asked him, what he does daily for his health, it made him realize he was falling short of time for a healthy exercise routine. In fact, in his quest to save more money for future health, he was compromising on his health today.

Probing questions like above, stimulates the brain to be proactive on the one’s chosen path and at the same time ensure that the approach to walk on the path is the right one and make amends if required.

By becoming aware of one’s feelings and strengths, coaching allows the client to move forward at an accelerated pace as there is more surety about the path to be taken. It is better to use it as a form of support upfront rather than use it in a reactive way.

I am sometimes asked by clients in coaching to fix things which are not working well or to get certain attitude shifts in executives to align with the organization’s values.

Even though coaching works well in these situations, it works remarkably well if it is used proactively and forms a part of organization culture. Then it becomes about preparing executives for leadership roles based on their own strengths and adopting the desired attitudes and behaviors in a more organic way.

The approach is to look at things not from consciousness of lack of something but from the desire to make things happen and move forward in life.

Much like the vaccination, I like to work with my coach more proactively rather than reactively to help me approach my goals with more awareness and a solution mindset. It helps me to plan better and be cognizant of my doubts and fears and what I can do to alleviate them.

Increased awareness leads to higher success percentage at the task at hand and helps me to take faster decisions to course correct to my destination.

What is your approach – proactive or reactive?
