The other day I reached home late after an exhausting day at work. I quickly wanted to retire to bed as I did not have the energy to do anything else, or so I had thought.
My daughter, who is 3 year old, refused to accept any of this and started to hover around me to wake up my enthusiasm so that I would play with her.
No amount of explanation was getting through to her and I felt more tired and irritated as I explained to her repeatedly.
I called upon my wife to help, who cajoled my dejected daughter, still hoping to play with her ‘Daddy’.
Soon after, I found myself in the comfort of pajamas, the bed and the most important thing – my phone. Before I knew it, I was hooked on to a web series.
My wife who walked in an hour later with my daughter and seeing me on the phone instead of asleep was quick to give me her piece of mind. Then she asked my daughter to reiterate the statement which goes around a lot in our home these days – ‘No phone’.
The accusation of my wife and my daughter’s gentle pleading startled me out of my inactive state and I quickly kept the phone to a side. I spent the next half hour in a fruitful way, playing with my daughter.
As I recollect, two things helped me and both are important to develop and be more conscious of where one wants to put their energies and avoid distractions at the same time.
First, is developing a conscious ‘won’t power’ for something which is not adding value or is a cause of distraction. Keeping the phone away and restricting me from the trap of excessive use of the phone, especially when I binge watch a series is a perfect example of the same.
Second, is working on my will power, to be able to do things that give me joy. Imitating the enthusiasm which my daughter had for our play time helped me to forget my tiredness and in fact gave me more energy at the end of our playtime.
What are the things that are important in your life, where you want to explore and develop the will power and the ‘won't power’ in yourself?
Coaching sessions offer a non judgmental space where one can figure out what gives them joy and enthusiasm and take up action steps to move in that direction.
As a wise man has said, “Greater the will, greater will be the flow of energy.” Are you willing?
