3 ways to get over the feeling of FOMO

We all suffer through FOMO at some or the other point. We may or may not know it. FOMO stands for ‘Fear of missing out’.

Many companies use this insight of human behavior in their marketing campaigns to deliberately bring about FOMO in potential customers. This feeling becomes the major reason to pump up the desire in a person for a product or service, which eventually finds satisfaction by the purchase.

But alas, the contentment is temporary even though the demand had been met. This is because the underlying drive for decision making is an impulse which entered into the heart through an external stimulus and is not in concurrence with the individual.

Identify the underlying reason for FOMO - In a round table discussion with fellow Coaches and my mentor, Peter Reding, a new term 'FOMOL' was created.

A good barometer is to look instead at the fear at the fear of missing out on the life which you want for yourself. What is the reason for choosing a particular job or a field of study? Is it your own choice or of others in the society?

It is always worthwhile to explore if the motivation for the desire is in alignment with what you want to have as a legacy for yourself.

Work with your feelings – If you don’t find fulfillment in a particular task or have a feeling that something is not right, check for whether the job is in alignment with your values. Don’t try to hide or undermine your feelings.

It is always helpful to accept and acknowledge the feelings, however odd they may seem.

What can you do which will help you to embrace your own feelings and values?

Acknowledge yourself of your strengths – If you feel exhaustion or repent while working, see if the task at hand allows you to use your natural strengths. As one becomes aware and acknowledges the use of their innate strengths, one is able to accomplish things easily and effortlessly.

Coaching through rhythmic sessions helps to be in alignment with your strengths, values and life purpose. Being true to your own self you discard emotions like missing out or other unnecessary fears and find greater fulfillment in life.
